Austin schools come together to go ‘Under the Sea’

AUSTIN (KXAN/KNVA) — A lot of students around Austin take the summer off, but a group of theater kids from across AISD schools have been working for the past several weeks on bringing a popular Disney Musical to the stage. Performing the classic Disney’s The Little Mermaid is a first for the district.

“My director from McCallum [High School] is actually co-directing it with the director from Crockett,” Tristan Tierney said. “And he was like ‘Hey, this show is coming up at the new PAC, it’s the first ever musical to be performed here we’ve haven’t done this all city musical thing in like ten years.'”

The show is directed by Christina Burbank Shelton and Joshua Denning and features kids ages 1- to 18 years old.

“I love the kids, they are so cute, and I feel like people really underestimate them because these kids are doing the same nine hour rehearsals that we are, which is really long compared to what we do during the school year,” Antonio Skillicorn said.  “They are all doing a great job singing and dancing. They are very talented kids.”

The show runs from Thursday August 11, until Sunday August 14. Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults.
