‘Mary Poppins’ stage production mixes old and new

AUSTIN (KXAN/KNVA) —  The curtains are up for the Zach Theatre’s production of “Mary Poppins.”

Bringing the magic of a Disney film to the stage has its challenges, especially when the film has some groundbreaking special effects.

“I did have people ask us how are you gonna do the dancing penguins,” said Jill Blackwood, who plays Mary Poppins. “And full disclosure there are no dancing penguins.”

Instead of penguins, there are a few new songs and a story that’s a little closer to the original book by P.L. Travers.

“Me and Jane are very bratty children, but in the movie they are sweet,” says Anderson Zoll, who plays Michael Banks.

The musical runs until September 4.
