The hidden gems of Austin Film Festival


When big movies like La La Land and Wakefield are on the schedule for this year’s Austin Film Festival it is easy to forget about all the fantastic smaller, local movies being screened. To make sure you don’t miss any hidden gems we’ve selected a film for each day of the festival that we think you should attend:

Thursday – ProGamer


ProGamer explores the emerging world of electronic sports by following professional Starcraft II gamers Naniwa and White-Ra, who navigate worldwide gaming tournaments and their own personal lives.

Friday – My Life as a Film 


For her whole life, Eva Vitija saw her father from behind a camera. An obsessive videographer and documenter, he spent the majority of his time recording and later archiving his family. After he died, Eva decided to turn the camera around, taking over his extensive archive and weaving together footage and family interviews to better understand the man that raised her. My Life as a Film is a personal search for the surprising truths hidden behind a father’s pictures.

Saturday – Wrestling Alligators

James Billie is the charismatic leader of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, an alligator wrestler, a Grammy-nominated recording artist, and the father of Indian gaming. He also sits at the head of one of the biggest gaming operations in the world. Controversial both inside and outside his tribe, James Billie has used his charm and wits to beat the white man, time and again, at his own game. Now, faced with new battles, James and his tribe once again find their way of life challenged.

Sunday – Funniest 


The Funniest Person in Austin contest has been held for over 30 years to determine the best stand-up comedian in the city. This documentary follows the preparations, worries, and hopes of six comedians all looking to take the crown during the 2015 contest. Funniest is an intimate, behind the scenes look at funny people competing to get the last laugh.

Monday – Blood Stripe
A U.S. Marine sergeant returns home from her third tour of duty in Afghanistan unable to sleep and wracked by paranoia and anxiety. Feeling disconnected from her home life with her husband and friends and frustrated by the Department of Veterans Affairs, she retreats deep into Minnesota’s North Woods. There she seeks refuge at a picturesque summer camp with a plainspoken overseer and a local fisherman, but her deep emotional wounds continue to overwhelm and traumatize her.

Tuesday – Delinquent 
Joey’s on the verge of getting kicked out of high school and can’t wait. All he wants is to work for his father, a tree cutter by day and the leader of a gang of small-time thieves by night. So when Joey’s father asks him to fill in as lookout, Joey is thrilled—until a routine robbery goes very wrong. Caught between loyalties to family and a childhood friend in mourning, Joey has to deal with paranoid accomplices, a criminal investigation, and his own guilt.

Wednesday – Two Trains Runnin’ 
In June of 1964, two groups of young men made up of musicians, college students, and record collectors traveled to Mississippi. Though neither group was aware of the other, each had come on the same errand: to find an old blues singer and coax him out of retirement. Narrated by Common and featuring new music by Gary Clark Jr., Two Trains Runnin’ revisits an important moment when America’s cultural and political institutions were dramatically transformed.
